La Cage aux Folles
June 2016

La Cage moves through many different locations, some as open as a beach side street, some full as a completely furnished apartment with 5 separate entryways. I met this challenge using 5 different slip stages. The main one in the center tracked up and down stage and acted as the stage for the drag performances. It then became the landing for the apartment, and the pier for the beach. Two slip stages on either side of that housed staircases and an upper landing to a doorway. The doorways were on built in turn tables to allow them to change from exterior shops to the interior doors of the apartment. Most downstage were two slipstages dedicated to tracking on furniture for multiple locations--cafe tables, fainting couches, dressing tables.  Various sets of walls tracked in to complement these platforms--a center front door and palladium window flanked by large art nooks featuring nude portraits of one of our actors, and a proscenium and rain curtain for the night club. My favorite thing was that the slipstage allowed us to slowly push the girls through the raincurtain at the top of their numbers for a nice reveal.
