Avenue Q
Fall 2018

Avenue Q is set on a shabby, low rent apartment block where a fresh faced college graduate, Princeton, is ready to start his new life in NYC. The show is a satirical, adult take on Sesame Street, with puppets and humans living and interacting together. Puppet friendly laugh in windows are a must as well as “educational” videos that play through out. To keep the projection screen out of view until needed, the “window” of the center abandoned bodega is a roll drop revealing the screen behind. To keep scene changes streamlined, interior apartment scenes were created with limited furniture on wagons (sometimes dumpsters) and light isolation. The roof of bodega acted as the top of the empire state building. The block is bookended by a bus stop and a subway stop on each proscenium wall. I was able to complete this set within an 800$ materials budget and three weeks of build.
