The Addams Family
September 2014
The Addams Family comes from extremely iconic source material, so I wanted to reference that as much as possible. I watched a lot of episodes and did my best to recreate the interior and exterior of their home in the space I had. The base structure is the staircase and flanking walls, that fold in on themselves to create the outside walls of the house. The entry door and fire place are wagons that leave the stage. Some interior scenes like Morticia's boudoir and the playroom were accomplished with tracking walls and wagons. I sculpted the family tree on our proscenium using thick ship ropes and then skinned it in brown duckcloth, enhancing the shadows. with paint. Misha, my hired scenic painter for this show, painted portraits of the Addams Family ancestors (the specific cast members playing them) in their living forms, and these decorated all the walls.
